Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 12, 2015 (SKNIS): Plans to restore, revitalise and introduce six initiatives to improve and enhance the country’s historical sites, not only in Basseterre but around the island, will soon be underway, says Minister of Tourism, Honourable Lindsay Grant.
The Beautiful Basseterre initiative will be revived, said Minister Grant, noting that plans have already been put in place for refurbishing the Circus clock and ensuring that it is working. The two fountains in the Basseterre region will also be restored. In conjunction with the building owners around Basseterre, the minister stated that they are being encouraged to improve the building stock in that area.
The Ridge for Reef Project, also called the Cayon River Watershed Project, which is the restoration of the old Cotton Ginnery in Spooners, will take place over the next 12 months to make it an additional site for tourists. Minister Grant stated that there are also plans to introduce another new site or attraction through the abandoned, old Sugar Industry Railway Project.
The Black Rocks Project which has been stagnant for some time, said the minister, will be back on stream to ensure that it is on a level that adds to the visitors’ experience.
Plans to enhance the Ferry Terminal, which is in much need of improvement, said the minister, will be set in motion soon.
The Eco Park is expected to be handed over to the Government, in particularly the Ministry of Tourism by December 2016, another initiative that adds to the visitors’ experience. In addition to this, a significant project that will be introduced next year is the Enhancement of the Strip at Frigate Bay and Beach Replenishment. The project will continue into 2017 and will see the installation of a boardwalk, roads, improving the marsh areas and developing restaurants around the pond.
“It is a magnificent project,” said the tourism minister, while revealing that it will cost the Government approximately $7 million. “It’s going to be a beauty I believe, when it’s completed.”
