During a session of the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court on April 15, 2025, overseen by Her Honour Rhonda Nisbett-Browne, a significant verdict related to traffic offences was delivered.
Akil Clavier, a bus driver from Cayon, was found guilty of exceeding the speed limit on May 5, 2023, at Johnson Long Path. He was fined $3,000.00, which must be paid within one month, or he will face three months of imprisonment.
This conviction highlights a concerning and ongoing issue in our Federation—the increasing number of drivers who exceed posted speed limits. Speeding is one of the leading causes of severe road traffic accidents in St. Kitts and Nevis, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Too often, lives are irrevocably changed in seconds due to a driver’s negligence in following basic road safety laws.
We would like to remind all motorists that speed limits are in place to protect everyone—drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. The Traffic Department is actively working to enforce these laws through patrols, speed checks, and legal action in the courts. We urge all road users to drive responsibly, adhere to posted speed limits, and remain vigilant at all times.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is committed to promoting road safety and preserving lives. Let this conviction serve as a clear reminder: reckless driving has serious consequences. Please drive responsibly—because every life matters.
