St. Kitts and Nevis’ Independence 30 celebrated in Taiwan

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 1ST 2013 (CUOPM) – Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis living in Taiwan celebrated the 30th anniversary of the independence of the Federation of St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and Nevis at the Grand Hyatt Taipei on Sunday.

According to Taiwan’s China Post newspaper, the Caribbean country’s Ambassador Her Excellency Jasmine E. Huggins; Taiwan’s, Vice President His Excellency Wu Den-yi and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency,  Simon Ko,  were all present at the ceremony.

In addition, ambassadors and representatives from other countries as well as international students from St. Kitts and Nevis attended the event.

St. Kitts and Nevis is the youngest and smallest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The country is ranked No. 2 in a list of the 16 best Caribbean vacation destinations and No. 4 in a list of best islands in the world.

St. Kitts and Nevis has maintained diplomatic ties with Taiwan for thirty years.

“The close friendship with the Republic of China is based on mutual respect and adherence to the rule of law, and respect for democratic principles and human rights,” Huggins said in the event.

Besides beautiful scenery, St. Kitts and Nevis also boasts great foreign investment incentives, “with a 97-percent literacy rate, excellent infrastructure, and an attractive investment climate.”

Huggins pointed out that the country “provides great opportunities for business investments in the areas of tourism, information communications technology, agriculture and light manufacturing.”

A Taiwanese business has already made headway in the Caribbean country. Speedtech Energy is assisting St. Kitts and Nevis to utilize green energy and to curtail the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

In his speech at the ceremony, Wu also had nice remarks about St. Kitts and Nevis.

Considering the country’s beautiful sceneries, Wu said that he is positive that more and more Taiwanese businesses will make investments in St. Kitts and Nevis in the coming years.

Wu also expressed appreciation on behalf of Taiwan for St. Kitts and Nevis’s continuous efforts in collaborating with Taiwan to participate in various international activities.

“Hopefully the two countries may together establish a better future and collaborate in many more disciplines,” Wu said, and expressed his wishes that friendship and prosperity will continue for both of the countries.
