(Toronto, Canada, April 24, 2013) Fresh from a major Parliamentary victory in which he was able to share with his Nation the fact that the Government of St. Kitts & Nevis had produced budget surpluses in several accounts, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas urged some 200 St. Kitts-Nevis Nationals and friends attending a town hall meeting at the Toronto Council Chambers last weekend to make good use of the opportunities for land ownership that his Government has made available to Kittitians and Nevisians in the land of their birth.
Douglas’ St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration has revolutionized land and home ownership in the 50,000-person twin-island Federation, providing more homes and more land to the people of St. Kitts-Nevis than any administration in the Nation’s history. And during his weekend address, the Prime Minister made it clear that this was a path on which his Government was determined to stay.
With the world economic crisis making life in industrialized nations more difficult than had previously been the case, and with St. Kitts & Nevis having successfully diversified its economy since the 2005 closing of its sugar industry, the Douglas Administration has made clear its intention to ensure that Nationals living abroad are [i] aware of, and [ii] benefit from the myriad economic policies and programs that his Administration has put in place. This has been done, he has explained, both to boost economic activity at home and – most importantly – to enhance the socio-economic prospects of all St. Kitts-Nevis Nationals, whether living at home or abroad.
This is a message that Prime Minister Douglas has consistently delivered wherever in the world he interacts with St. Kitts-Nevis Nationals and one that is a key component of his Government’s overall focus and thrust.
Prime Minister Douglas, who was on his way to a UNAIDS conference in Vancouver, British Columbia as Caricom’s leading voice on health policy was accompanied by his Minister of Health, Marcella A. Liburd, as well as District Medical Officer Dr. Vance Gilbert.
