Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy wrote an emotional message to the West Indies team as they exited the 2021 T20 World Cup. Sammy led West Indies to victory in the 2012 and 2016 editions.
Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy posted an emotional message following West Indies’ elimination from the 2021 T20 World Cup. The two-time T20 World Cup captain claimed fans should celebrate what the team achieved over the years.
The defending champions had the campaign to forget in the UAE as they lost four of their five games. It is likely to be the last tournament of many players in the team with a younger squad expected for the new edition.
Sammy wrote on Twitter, “Today, win or lose I choose to celebrate the legacy that this T20 team created.”
“West Indies were kings in this format and today brings an end to that era which I played in. The dynasty is over and I thank you for all the great memories,” added Sammy.
The ongoing edition is the first time since 2010 that West Indies have not made the semi-finals. They lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2016 while losing in the semi-final to eventual champions Sri Lanka in 2014.
While having a lot of the players responsible for their glory years in the squad this time, most of them could not find form or adapt to the conditions in the UAE. Not only did results not go their way, but Kieron Pollard’s men also did not play the aggressive and fearless brand of cricket they are known for.
Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle were given a guard of honour by the Australian team after the match. While Bravo has announced his retirement, it looks Gayle will follow suit soon.
Gayle hinted at the announcement as he waved his bat towards fans following his dismissal and distributed his batting gloves to fans inside the stadium. He took a wicket in what could be his final delivery in international cricket by dismissing Mitchell Marsh.
