Three Straight T&T Women Lose Again in Super50

Samara Ramnath SOLID PERFORMANCE: Samara Ramnath

Trinidad and Tobago fell to their third consecutive defeat in the Cricket West Indies Women’s Super50 after conceding a five-wicket loss to Jamaica at Conaree Cricket Centre in St Kitts yesterday.

Batting first, T&T were dismissed for 168 in 43.1 overs which was not enough to challenge the Jamaicans, who romped to 172 for five off 31.4 overs with Chadean Nation anchoring the chase with 70 off 78 balls.

Despite a couple of late wickets for Samara Ramnath (3/24), including the big scalps of Stafanie Taylor (38) and Nation, there was no stopping Jamaica as they secured their third straight win in the competition.

After winning the toss, T&T struggled with the bat, slipping to 51 for four before LeeAnn Kirby’s 48 off 56 balls got them past the 150-run mark.

Apart from Ramnath’s 29 off 58 balls, 17 off 29 deliveries from Karishma Ramharack, and Kirby’s knock towards the end, no other T&T batter managed to get into double digits.

T&T lost Shunelle Sawh (6) in the fourth over with the score on 14 after the batter was trapped lbw trying to turn a delivery from Neisha-Ann Waisome (1/12) into the leg-side.

The experienced Britney Cooper was then caught at long leg off Kate Wilmott (3/33) for eight with a score of 33 for two while Djenaba Joseph was caught by Wilmott at mid-off off the bowling of Celina Whyte with a score of 35.

Selene O’Neil (6) and Ramnath took the score past 50 before O’Neil was bowled by Vanessa Watts for six.

Ramharack and Ramnath tried to stage a recovery for T&T, taking the score to 81 before Ramnath was outstumped off the bowling of Taylor (1/23) in the 22nd over.

Ramharack was run out with a score of 97 before Kirby intervened. She struck two sixes and four fours to take the score to 155 before she was caught on the long-on boundary by Abigail Bryce off the bowling of Watts (2/28), effectively ending T&T’s fight-back with the bat.

In reply, Jamaica scored quickly despite losing both openers, Keneshia Ferron (18) and Rashada Williams (11) inside the first ten overs.

Nation and Taylor put on 101 runs for the third wicket to all but seal the win. They took the score from 38 for two to 139 for two before Ramnath removed both batters but by that time the damage was already done.

T&T will face Guyana in the penultimate round of matches on Monday at Conaree while Jamaica will face the Windward Islands at St Paul’s and the Leewards will face Barbados at Warner Park.

The Super50 concludes on Wednesday with the final round of games.
