UN Needs 5.2 Million Well-Trained Teachers By 2015

United Nations officials have warned that there is a huge need for well-trained teachers, if the education targets in the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to be met.

In marking World Teachers’ Day on Saturday, the officials called for the recruitment of millions of professionals.

Their call comes as Caribbean leaders, who addressed the just-concluded 68th Session of the UN General Assembly Debate, blamed developed countries for failure to meet the MDGs.

In a study to coincide with World Teachers’ Day, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said some 5.2 million teachers need to be hired worldwide to reach the MDG target of achieving universal primary education by 2015.

The UN said the challenge goes beyond numbers adding that more teachers must also mean better quality learning, through appropriate training and support.
