World Mental Health Day.

Charlestown -Nevis- The Mental Health Unit on Nevis will be observing a week of activities in celebration of World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day is celebrated on the 10th of October this year and according to Mr. Oldain Claxton, who is a Social Worker and Counsellor at the Unit, this year’s theme is “Make mental health and well-being for all, a global priority.”

The Nevis Mental Health Unit’s week of activities is geared towards raising awareness of the serious implications of mental well-being, which include the following:

Sunday 9th October-Church service at the Emmaus Chapel in Charlestown, starting at 9.30 am

Monday 10th October- Persons are encouraged to wear green in solidarity with loved ones.

There will also be an address by the Minister of Health and relevant health tips on VON radio.

A facility walk-through will be allowed at the Mental Health Unit, located at Prospect, at 8.20 am and Community appreciation awards will be held at the Gender Affairs Conference room from 9.30 to 11.30 am.

The day will climax with a client social and recreation day from 12 noon to 3 pm at the ET Willet Park.

Tuesday 11th October-Mocktail nonalcoholic beverage competition from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Mental Health Unit, located at Prospect

Wednesday 12th October-Health screening day from 9 am to 12 noon at the Mental Health Unit. This will involve such checks as: Height, weight, BMI, heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose and temperature.

Thursday 13th October-Stigma and discrimination workshop, for Public Safety and Health, care professionals, at the Anglican Church Hall from 8.30 am to 1 pm

Friday 14th October-Mental Health Unit staff retreat. The office will close to the public at 1 pm.

Saturday 15th October-‘Let’s get physical walk’, starting at 5.30 am at Malcolm Guishard Park, through the Bypass road, along Stuart Williams drive, past the roundabout, through Charlestown, down the Samuel Hunkins drive, through Pinneys and culminating at the Malcolm Guishard Park.

Mr. Claxton is urging the general public to support those activities that are open to the public.
