The two Nevisian under 19 cricketers who represented the Leeward Islands team, in the recent regional under 19 tournament, returned home last evening to a heroes’ welcome.

Carlon and Onaje

Captain of the team, Carlon Bowen Tuckett and Onaje Amory, were met by an official delegation and family members, at the Oualie pier on Sunday evening.

The official delegation included the Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn, President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Carlisle Powell and Director of Sports, Jamir Claxton.

All delivered brief addresses and lauded the two players on their excellent returns in the tournament.

President Powell noted that it is the first time in about twenty years that the Leewards would have won the tournament.

He further indicated that with the intention of fielding more under 19 players to the Windies team, the current under 17 team players will be allowed to play in upcoming local tournaments as a team and still be able to play for their individual teams.

Minister Evelyn not only congratulated the players but also saluted the continued support of their parents.

Carlon Bowen Tuckett thanked God for the success of his team and thanked his lead bowler Onaje for making life easy for him as a captain.

He also thanked his other teammates for the roles they played in ensuring the championship trophy.

Onaje Amory was the tournament’s lead wicket-taker with 14 wickets and Carlon Tuckett saved his best batting performance for last, when it was most needed, to score 68 in the finals.

He also captained his team superbly and was arguably the best wicketkeeper on show.
