The Roles and Responsibilities of the Immigration Department in Implementing the Obligations of the CSME and OECS Economic Union Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 July 2016‏

Basseterre, St. Kitts, (18 July 2016) – The Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security (Immigration Department) will be hosting a two-day workshop on the Roles and Responsibilities of the Immigration Department in Implementing the Obligations of the CSME and OECS Economic Union.

The main purpose of this training is to further sensitize and build awareness of immigration officers within the Federation regarding their roles, responsibilities and obligations as far as the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the OECS Economic Union is concerned. Such training is critical given that Immigration Officers represent the first point of contact when entering a country.

It must be noted that St. Kitts and Nevis would have signed on to a number of Trade Agreements such as the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the OECS Economic Union, and as such is contractually obligated to comply with the outlined conditions thereto.

The staging of this workshop forms part of the efforts of the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs to provide leadership for implementing the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), the OECS Economic Union along with other negotiated bilateral and multilateral trade agreements and ongoing and future trade agreements.

The workshop which is scheduled to take place in the conference room at the Customs and Excise Department, Bird Rock, St. Kitts from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm daily, is therefore expected to deliver tremendous benefits for both the Federation’s immigration officers and the Federation as a whole.
