New York – The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis is proud to announce that the Federation has been identified among only 40 of the 193 Member States of the United Nations to have a female-led Permanent Mission. This places Saint Kitts and Nevis within approximately 20.7% of UN Member States with women serving in such a senior diplomatic leadership role—a notable benchmark in global representation.
This recognition reflects the Federation’s deliberate and values-driven commitment to gender equality in international affairs and the elevation of women to positions of authority and influence in diplomacy.
The Government extends commendation to Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew for his consistent leadership and advocacy in advancing women’s empowerment. His approach as a strong “HeForShe” ally demonstrates a clear understanding that inclusive governance is not symbolic, but strategic—strengthening national voice, credibility, and effectiveness on the world stage.
Globally, women remain underrepresented in diplomacy despite gradual progress. According to longstanding data from the United Nations, women account for roughly one-third of senior leadership roles in foreign ministries worldwide, and even fewer serve as ambassadors or heads of mission. While progress has improved since landmark frameworks such as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, parity remains far from achieved.
Against this backdrop, the Federation’s recognition is significant. It signals not only national progress, but alignment with global best practice: countries that appoint women to senior diplomatic roles consistently demonstrate stronger institutional diversity, broader policy perspectives, and more inclusive approaches to negotiation and peacebuilding.
International research and UN analysis continue to show that women’s participation in diplomacy and governance is linked to improved outcomes in peace processes, greater attention to social development priorities, and more durable multilateral agreements. The inclusion of women in leadership is therefore not only a matter of equity, but of governance quality and global effectiveness.
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis reiterates that leadership which actively appoints and supports women in senior roles reflects a forward-looking national vision—one that recognizes talent without limitation, strengthens institutional resilience, and ensures that national representation abroad reflects the full diversity and capability of its people.
Saint Kitts and Nevis remains firmly committed to advancing gender equality and will continue to champion inclusive leadership within the international community.
