BASSETERRE, St Kitts and Nevis — The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources is strengthening awareness of agriculture, food production, nutrition and sustainability among young people through its Youth and School Engagement initiative, as part of activities marking World Food Day 2026.
Under the theme “Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow,” the initiative highlights the important role that education and youth participation play in building resilient food systems and strengthening food security in St Kitts and Nevis.
The Ministry’s engagement with students seeks to foster curiosity about agriculture, deepen understanding of where food comes from, and encourage greater appreciation for the farmers, fishers and other stakeholders who contribute to the nation’s food supply.
By introducing young people to the importance of food production, healthy nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices, the initiative also encourages them to recognise the opportunities available within the agriculture and food sectors.
The Ministry believes that empowering students with knowledge about agriculture and sustainability is an important step towards developing a generation that is more conscious of food security, environmental responsibility and the need to support local food production.
Youth engagement remains essential to the long-term development of the agricultural sector, particularly as St Kitts and Nevis continues to pursue strategies that strengthen local production, reduce dependence on imported food and build greater resilience within its food systems.
Through educational outreach and school-based engagement, the Ministry aims to inspire young people to view agriculture not only as a source of food, but also as a field of innovation, entrepreneurship and opportunity.
As the Federation joins the global observance of World Food Day 2026, the Ministry reaffirms the importance of investing in young minds and equipping them with the knowledge and awareness needed to contribute to a more sustainable food future.
By inspiring young people today, St Kitts and Nevis can help cultivate a stronger, more resilient and sustainable food system for tomorrow.
