Caricom Ambassadors Engage UN Security Council Members Ahead of Next Secretary-General Straw Poll, Reaffirm Support for Caribbean Candidate

New York, (Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations) (October 13, 2026) – Members of the CARICOM Caucus of Ambassadors to the United Nations, including the Ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, H.E. Dr. Mutryce Williams, have commenced high-level diplomatic engagements with members of the United Nations Security Council ahead of the next straw poll in the selection of the next Secretary-General, reaffirming the Caribbean Community’s strong and collective support for its candidate, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of Guyana.

The Ambassadors met with several Security Council members today and will engage others throughout the week, advancing a clear message of regional unity, diplomatic purpose and the importance of Caribbean representation at the highest level of the United Nations. Central to these discussions is equitable geographic rotation and the legitimate expectation that Latin America and the Caribbean should have the opportunity to contribute to the Organisation’s next chapter of leadership. Recognising the distinguished candidates in the field, CARICOM is making a principled case for regional equity and serious consideration of its nominee in a selection process of profound global significance.

This initiative is about more than a candidate; it is about ensuring that the voices of the Caribbean, including small states whose commitment to multilateralism remains steadfast, are meaningfully represented in shaping the future of the international order.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett brings substantial experience in diplomacy, foreign affairs and multilateral engagement, including service as Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Her experience navigating international priorities and fostering diplomatic engagement speaks directly to the demands of a Secretary-General tasked with building consensus, advancing peace and strengthening confidence in the United Nations at a time of heightened geopolitical divisions and global uncertainty.

As the selection process advances, CARICOM will continue its strategic engagement with Security Council members, championing geographic equity, inclusive leadership and a United Nations that reflects the aspirations of its entire membership.

The Caribbean is prepared to contribute to the future of global leadership. CARICOM stands united behind Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and calls for its candidate to receive the serious consideration warranted by the region’s aspirations, experience and enduring commitment to multilateral cooperation., and it need not be powerful by conventional measures to help shape the future of the world.
