British-Nevisian businesswomen tackling hair discrimination in St. Kitts Nevis

(St. Kitts Nevis 22 November 2022): Two British Nevisian businesswomen, Dominique Lescott, founder of Hair Popp and Chantal Miller, founder of Island Girls Rock, set to tackle hair discrimination in the Caribbean by co-hosting a film screening event inside the Orchid Room of Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, in Nevis on Sunday 27 November 2022.

Hair Popp in collaboration with Island Girls Rock is screening the film Sorf Hair, a documentary directed and produced by award-winning Trinidadian film-maker Shari Petti who uses storytelling from a Caribbean perspective, to discuss the discrimination of natural hair which is often described as ‘sorf hair’ or good hair’.

The in-person film screening will be followed by a panel conversation with local women about the natural hair movement in the Caribbean, with audience input. Ticket holders will have the opportunity to do an elevator 60-second pitch of their business to the audience, with a chance of winning prizes from other local businesses in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis worth over $200.

About Hair Popp
Hair Popp is a digital beauty and lifestyle brand with a two-fold mission – to get quality natural hair care and lifestyle products into as many homes across the globe, and to empower independent, black businesses. Since launching in 2018 in Birmingham (UK), the brand has seen many hair brands springboard to wider success, partnering with major high-street retailers. Hair Popp has been invited to places like Facebook headquarters, high street banks and some of the UK’s largest hair shows. Lescott currently has a temporary pop-up shop in Camps, Nevis where people can shop offline in the Federation.

About Island Girls Rock
Island Girls Rock is a non-profit initiative celebrating girls and women of Caribbean heritage, founded by Miller in 2016, in London. The brand is dedicated to supporting and showcasing our culture through seeding and nurturing a global ecosystem of aligned visionaries whilst championing collaborative opportunities between girls and women of the Caribbean and its diaspora. Previous events were themed around wellness and advocacy (IGR Wellness Day, Back Yard Jams and IGR at The Houses of Parliament – to name a few). Before relocating to Nevis earlier this year, Miller hosted a luxury afternoon tea event where all proceeds from the event were donated to both Guy’s Cancer and Pink Lily Cancer Care based in Nevis.
