Construction of breasting dolphin at deep water port

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 22ND 2014 (CUOPM) – Development of the cargo port at Bird Rock to accommodate larger cruise ships visiting St. Kitts continues this week and mariners have been advised to stay 100 feet away from the construction area.

The St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) said work continues on the breasting dolphin currently being constructed.

The construction of the dolphin is part of SCASPA’s long-term strategy to further develop and modernise the cargo port.

A SCASPA spokesman said seventeen (17) piles will be driven into the seabed to gain compressive strength and provide a platform to cruise ships that are larger than the current berth at the Cargo Port, for breasting and mooring.

This infrastructure is being designed in such a way that it will still be used as a breasting dolphin when SCASPA develops and expands the Bird Rock pier in the near future to accommodate larger and more cargo vessels at the same time.

In light of facilitating the completion of the construction of the dolphin, the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority has solicited the cooperation of all mariners by asking them to stay 100 feet away from the area south of the Deep Water pier within the vicinity of the breasting dolphin during the period from January 18th to 25th.

According to Mr. Ludel Harvey, Chief Marine Pilot of SCASPA, the request has been made for the safety of mariners.

“During the construction of the dolphin, the driving in piles into bedrock depths, welding and testing of piles, cutting of steel and other work will cause debris to fly all over and noise pollution. For the safety of all vessels and persons operating within the port, we have asked all mariners not to operate within 100 feet of the Deep Water pier.”

The construction work is smoothly progressing by Jay Cashman Inc. and is expected to be completed, February 15th 2014.
