A majestic, maiden first-class double century from opener Kirk McKenzie, and a composed, maiden first-class hundred from Kevin Wickham led West Indies Academy batting on Friday. The left-handed McKenzie was undefeated on 209 and Wickham was on 104 not out, as the Academy reached 378-4, in reply to Team Weekes first innings total of 401, at the close on the third day of the four-day, first-class match
Left-hander McKenzie reached his milestone from 340 balls when he punched a delivery from left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul through cover for his 25th four, and Wickham reached his landmark soon after from 196 balls with a languid, lofted drive over long-off for six off the same bowler.
McKenzie has so far cracked 25 fours and six from 365 balls during his seven hours and 40 minutes stay in the middle. Wickham has so far struck only eight fours and six from 223 balls in 4-1/4 hours at the crease.
The pair has so far shared an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 229. McKenzie was understandably delighted with his performance. He said:
“It feels really good to go out and get a big score, and what is also important is I batted through the day. Kevin also played a great knock and I’m happy to see him reach triple figures as well. It’s a special feeling and we just want to keep going and put some more (runs) on the board.”
The Academy started the day on 89-2 and McKenzie and Kevlon Anderson batted through the first hour and completed an 81-run stand for the third wicket.
Sinclair got the breakthrough when he had Anderson caught at forward short leg for 26 in his fourth over, and followed up when he had keeper Tevin Imlach caught at cover without scoring in his next over.
