Public Safety Advisory: Motorists Urged To Drive Responsibly

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force reminds all motorists that the traffic laws of St. Kitts and Nevis are in full effect at all times, and every driver is expected to operate with the level of responsibility that public safety demands.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Licensing Authority does not grant children permission to operate motor vehicles. Every person behind the wheel is an adult. It therefore stands to reason that the Police expect drivers to think, act, and conduct themselves in a manner befitting their physical age and mental stage.

What we continue to see on our roadways tells a different story: a growing number of adults are driving with a level of recklessness more fitting of adolescence. The disregard for basic safety, the impatience, the impulsivity, and the casual acceptance of life-threatening behaviour are not only disappointing; they are appalling and deadly. Coming from adults who also have a duty to guide and guard our nation’s young, these behaviours are frustrating, dangerous, unacceptable, and far too often, terribly disastrous.

Let it be clearly understood: being “young and dumb” is not a legal defence. The laws that govern minors do not extend upward to adults who behave in this manner. On the road, the distance between careless and catastrophic, deliberate and dead, or silly and sorry is often no wider than a cobweb.

Whether enforcement tools are visible or assumed inactive, the responsibility to drive safely remains unchanged. Traffic laws do not turn on and off with public chatter. They apply consistently and continuously.
Motorists are therefore expected to:

✅ Obey the speed limits
✅ Maintain full control of their vehicle at all times
✅ Refrain from driving under the influence
✅ Exercise caution, patience, and sound judgment

The RSCNPF will continue to enforce the law. Those who insist on gambling with their own safety and that of others will face the consequences of the choices they make.
Choices create chances. Chances carry consequences. We strongly urge every motorist to choose wisely.
Drive responsibly.
