World Food Day will be observed on Sunday 16th October.

In light of this, the Ministry and Department of Agriculture will be hosting a week of activities.

One of the grand events on the calendar will be held at the INDIAN CASTLE FRUIT TREE ORCHARD, located at Indian castle.

Chief coordinator of the event and the man who has led the way in developing the 35 acres of land in the area, is –better known as BANKIE.

He explained that the event will be a Family Fun Day, when members of the general public will be allowed into the orchard and be able to witness firsthand, the great work that has been done there in the planting of hundreds of fruit trees, of a wide variety.

BANKIE explained that the orchard is located in an area generally referred to as a dry zone, but it has now been proven that with the right care and attention, there is no bad soil in Nevis.

Planted at the orchard are such trees as coconut, shaddock, sugarcane, guava, mango, pear, gooseberry, passion fruit and many more.

Members of the general public are invited to bring their picnic baskets and have a family day out.

Music will be provided and vendors are kindly invited to come and sell their wares at no cost.

A bouncing castle will be provided for the children.

The Abattoir and the Agro Processing Unit will also be on hand to sell their products.

The Ministry of Tourism will also host a demonstration featuring cassava.

This will be streamed live.

According to BANKIE, it is a chance to give back to the community and at the same time demonstrate that we can provide quite a lot of our food here on Nevis and help in a big way in reducing the food import bill.

The event commences at 9 am and is expected to conclude at 6 pm.

However, BANKIE is advising that the place will be in readiness for activity from as early as 7.30 am for the early comers.
