Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis — The Department of Marine Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources are strengthening the Federation’s capacity to respond to sargassum influxes through the acquisition of two specialised DESMI workboats.
The workboats were procured and delivered to St. Kitts and Nevis under the UNDP-led, Government of Japan-funded Project for Improving National Sargassum Management Capacities in the Caribbean.
As part of the project’s closeout activities, DESMI conducted commissioning and operational training for the newly delivered workboats. The training provided technicians and operators with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in the safe operation, maintenance and deployment of the vessels.
Acquiring this specialised equipment strengthens the Federation’s national capacity to monitor and respond to sargassum influxes. It will also support ongoing efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems, coastal communities and livelihoods that depend on the health of the marine environment.
Through continued investment in specialised equipment, technical expertise and inter-agency collaboration, St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed to strengthening its preparedness and response capabilities for sargassum events.
