Cecely Browne Integrated School Takes Top Honours in Plastic Recycling Project

Charlestown-Nevis-The Cecely Browne Integrated School (CBIS) was adjudged the overall winner in the recently concluded Plastic recycling competition, which was held between Primary Schools across the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Thirty-three schools from both St. Kitts and Nevis participated in the contest, which ran from 11th September to 6th October 2023.

The competition was coordinated by the Taiwan Technical Mission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.

The students and teachers at each school collected plastic bottles during the period of the competition and these were weighed and tabulated each week.

The top schools were determined by the average pounds of plastic, collected by each student.

An awards ceremony was held at the CUNA Conference Center, on Thursday 9th November, at which the grand announcements of the top placers were made.

The ceremony was ably chaired by Ms. Xarriah Browne, PRO at the Solid Waste Management Corporation and included an opening prayer by Ms. Nerissa Williams, PS in the Ministry of Environment; the national anthems of Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis; remarks by Ambassador C. H. Lin of the Republic of China/Taiwan; Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke-Minister of Environment; a video presentation of the recycling efforts of the students and presentation of awards.

The Top Schools were announced as follows:

The Seventh-day Adventist School on St. Kitts, won the award for the most bottles collected in pounds on St. Kitts (3,564.94 pounds) and the Charlestown Primary School collected the most bottles in pounds on Nevis with 1,590.01 pounds

Overall winner-Cecely Browne Integrated School-582.46 pounds with a total of 26 students
22.40 pounds on average per student

2nd place- VOJN Primary-1.156.48 pounds with a total of 67 students
An average of 17.26 pounds per student

3rd place- St. Kitts Seventh Day Adventist school-3,564.94 pounds, with a student population of 285
An average of 12.51 pounds per student

A total of 16,650.64 pounds of plastic bottles were collected by the participating schools-an average of 3.27 pounds per student
