Funeral Service for Nevis’ first road fatality for 2013, the late Hardatt ‘Chandapaul’ Balgobin

(CHARLESTOWN NEVIS)- On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 9, 2013, friends, families and well wishers assembled at Hunkins’ Funeral Home to pay their last respects to Hardatt ‘Shandapaul’ Balgobin.

Balgobin was tragically killed in an unfortunate situation when he was toppled over by a vehicle. The incident took place on Saturday, October 5, 2013 just a few yards away from Balgobin’s home on Government Road Charlestown.

Dr. John Essien, a Medical Doctor at the Alexander Hospital gave a touching tribute. He noted that his friendship with the deceased started many years ago and it had blossomed tremendously over the years. Dr. Essien said that the qualities possessed by Mr. Balgobin especially as a husband and father are not familiar with many men. He stated that Balgobin was one of the kindest individuals known to mankind and we should try our endeavor best to emulate him. In closing the doctor told the family to be strong and he hoped that they may find comfort in the almighty God.

Ms. Tessa Howell, a close friend of Balgobin also gave some remarks. She noted that Balgobin was her Saturday morning date. Ms. Howell claimed that Mr. Balgobin was a very easy going person who greeted everyone with a smile and was always quick to help no matter the situation. Ms. Howell said Balgobin was a profound lover of cricket and she shared a light moment with him during an encounter in St. Kitts.

Howell said, “I am not really a follower of cricket but on one occasion he did explained the game to me, he told me when to hush and when to make noise”. With those words the audience erupted with laughter. Ms. Howell said that the memories which they shared will be cherished until the end of her days.

Balgobin was an employer at the Nevis Agricultural Department.

One person had been in police custody assisting with the investigations of the incident. This media house has learnt that he has been released without charge.
