BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 21ST 2013 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas begins an official visit to the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Wednesday.
The visit at the invitation of that country’s President, His Excellency Ma Ying-jeou, who made a State Visit to St. Kitts and Nevis a few months ago, is aimed at wooing Taiwan manufacturers to set up businesses, specifically manufacturing plants in the Federation.
“It is in keeping with my Government’s policy of seeking new business which will provide job opportunities for Kittitians and Nevisians, injecting foreign direct investment and grow the economy,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who heads the six person delegation.
Also accompanying Prime Minister Douglas are Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Joseph Edmeade; Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Her Excellency Mrs. Astona Browne; Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr. Erasmus Williams; Mr. Linkon Maynard, Chairman of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank and Vice Chairman of the Manufacturing Division of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Linkon Maynard and Manager of Api Harowe and Past President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Carol Evelyn.
Prime Minister Douglas will also meet and hold discussions with the Taiwan Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency David Yung; officials of the Ministry of Economic Affairs; ;
Prime Minister Douglas and his delegation will also hold talks with the .Chairman of the Foreign Trade Council and Taiwanese businessmen during a Trade and Investment Promotion meeting. A business session will also be held with members of the Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association.
Visits will also be made to Kinmen County Government, the Chushan Gallery, the Maestro Wu Artillery Shell Knives Factory, the Da-Tan Wind Power Plant and the IDCF to discuss a new programme for renewable energy.
The Prime Minister will pay a courtesy call on President Ma on Friday at the Presidential Palace on Friday afternoon and be special guest at a State Banquet hosted by President Ma.
On Saturday, he visits the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis in Taipei and meets with Ambassador Her Excellency Jasmine Huggins and Kittitian and Nevisian students studying in Taiwan.
