Windies Women Suffer Setback in Semi-Final Race

The West Indies Women’s hopes of securing a place in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup took a significant hit on Wednesday after they fell to a 38-run defeat against England at Lord’s.

Chasing a challenging target of 187, the Caribbean side battled hard but could only muster 148 for 5 from their allotted overs, leaving them with an uphill task in their quest for a place in the tournament’s final four.

England laid the foundation for victory with a strong batting display, posting 186 for 7. Danni Wyatt-Hodge led the charge with a well-played 65, while captain Heather Knight contributed 43. Zaida James Munisar was among the pick of the West Indies bowlers, claiming 2 wickets for 42 runs.

In response, the West Indies struggled to keep pace with the required run rate despite an unbeaten 51 from Chinelle Henry. Claxton provided support with 21, but the target ultimately proved beyond reach. England spinner Charlie Dean played a key role with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 31 runs.

The West Indies were further hampered by the absence of veteran batter Stafanie Taylor, who did not take part in the chase. Following the match, captain Hayley Matthews revealed that Taylor was experiencing “chest tightness” and “difficulty breathing.”

Matthews expressed optimism that the experienced all-rounder will recover in time for the team’s crucial final group-stage encounter against Ireland on Saturday, a match that could determine the West Indies’ semi-final fate.
