Prime Minister Dr Godwin Friday has reaffirmed that the completion of the new Acute Hospital at Arnos Vale is a top priority for his administration, placing its importance above the construction of major government buildings such as a new parliament.
Speaking on **Hot97**, Prime Minister Friday stressed that ensuring access to “basic, proper health care” for citizens is an urgent national need that must take precedence over what he described as symbolic or monumental projects.
“We have to put the money where the pain is,” Friday said, emphasising that limited national resources should be directed toward improving public health rather than expanding government infrastructure.
The Prime Minister noted that the construction of a modern hospital alone will not be sufficient to address the country’s healthcare challenges. He underscored the need for a comprehensive **National Health Insurance** programme to accompany the facility, ensuring that citizens can access medical services in a timely and affordable manner.
He explained that without such a system in place, individuals in need of urgent medical tests or treatment are often forced to “raise money on the street” or delay care until their conditions worsen.
In addition to completing the hospital, Prime Minister Friday highlighted the importance of investing in preventive healthcare. He said a stronger focus on prevention would help keep the population healthier while reducing the long-term costs associated with more complex medical procedures.
The Prime Minister reiterated that his government remains committed to prioritizing healthcare delivery as a critical component of national development and social well-being.
