Saharan Dust Plume Affecting St. Kitts and Nevis

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS — The St. Kitts and Nevis Meteorological Services has advised that the Federation is currently experiencing the effects of a plume of Saharan dust moving across the Caribbean region.

The dust originates from the Sahara Desert in North Africa and is transported thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean by the easterly trade winds before reaching the Lesser Antilles.

As a result, residents may observe hazy skies and reduced visibility across the islands. While these conditions may appear unusual, Saharan dust intrusions are a normal seasonal occurrence that typically affects the Caribbean between March and September each year.

The Meteorological Services continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

Members of the public are encouraged to remain aware of the conditions, particularly individuals with respiratory sensitivities, as air quality may be temporarily impacted.
