BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — The ongoing technical mission by the World Food Programme (WFP) moved closer to completion with the hosting of a midway technical workshop on Friday, May 8, involving representatives from the Ministries of Education, Health, Agriculture, and Finance, along with other key stakeholders.
The workshop provided an important platform for participants to review findings gathered throughout the mission and engage in meaningful discussions aimed at strengthening school meals and nutrition initiatives across St. Kitts and Nevis.
Key areas of focus included the policy framework and institutional responsibilities surrounding school feeding programmes, nutrition and menu standards, and gaps identified within existing national guidelines. Participants also explored supply chain systems, procurement processes, and opportunities to strengthen linkages with local farmers and food producers.
Discussions further examined programme management, staffing, operational efficiency, costing structures, and long-term financial sustainability. Stakeholders also considered strategies to better integrate school feeding initiatives with broader national social protection systems.
The workshop formed part of the final phase of the WFP technical mission, which included visits to schools, farms, wholesalers, supermarkets, and central kitchen facilities, as well as consultations with government officials and other national stakeholders.
At the conclusion of the mission, the WFP is expected to produce a comprehensive report containing recommendations to support future improvements to school meals and nutrition programmes throughout the Federation.
Officials noted that the initiative reflects the Government’s continued commitment to enhancing student nutrition, promoting healthier lifestyles, and strengthening food security through sustainable and collaborative approaches.
